Serger Apron Class

Get to know your serger and sew this cute apron.  This apron has two nested pockets and a loop for a towel, AND, it's reversible! So handy…   You’ll learn how to insert a zipper, master making fabric tubes or loops, and get acquainted with using decorative threads like woolly nylon and pearl cotton.

Make one for yourself, then get started making gifts for your friends and family.  It’s also a great stash-buster project.

Skill Level: Confident beginner

Skill Details: You must have enough knowledge of your serger/overlocker to know how to thread it for a four-thread and three-thread overlock stitch. This class is suitable for a confident sewer with limited garment construction knowledge.

  • Cookin’ in Color apron pattern
  • Your own serger in good working order, along with its manual or instruction guide
  • Four spools of serger thread to match or coordinate with your fabric
  • 1 decorative thread and 1 coordinating texturized serger thread  (See pattern instructions for guidance)
  • Nylon zipper (14” to 16” long, size 3 or 4.5, see notes below)
  • Piping or cording foot (see notes below)
  • Quilting or other long, see-through ruler that has gridlines & a rotary cutter
  • Extra fabric scraps (used to test the stitch quality)
  • All tools listed in pattern instructions
  • Other basic sewing supplies (eg. scissors, nips for trimming threads, magic clips or pins, long, sturdy hand-sewing needles (for basting), erasable pen or marker, quilting ruler, tape measure, etc.)
  • OPTIONAL: ¼” Steam-A-Seam
  • OPTIONAL: tube turner or chopstick

Pre-work before class:

  • Pre-wash your fashion fabric. Highly recommended as aprons get dirty and need laundering, and cotton shrinks!
  • Cut the main pattern pieces as directed in the pattern, EXCEPT cut the “loop” fabric to 2” x 14”.
  • If you plan on fussy cutting elements, such as the outside pocket, I recommend creating pattern pieces from Pellon 810 Tru-Grid or Pellon 830 Easy Pattern.  Both products are somewhat see-through, gridded and have a grippy texture, which will make cutting out super easy.
Important notes:

  • Zipper:  Nylon teeth only!  A #3 will be more flexible, a #4.5 will make a bolder statement, but will be trickier for your serger to stitch over.
  • Piping or cording foot:  Whichever you use should have a channel under it, which the zipper coil will nest within for smooth serging.
  • Towel loop:  You will learn how to create a “self-turning’’ tube using your standard serger foot. So, a “Belt loop binder” foot is not needed.
  • Scrap fabric:  We’ll use it to test out your stitches and practice techniques.
