The Cottage Shirt



Skill Level: Intermediate to garment sewing
Skill Details: You must already have knowledge of your sewing machine and how to operate it.
This class is suitable for a confident sewer with limited garment construction knowledge.
Requirements:
• Cottage Shirt pattern • Muslin or other (stash fabric) that you would like to use for practicing collar construction
• Pre-cut fashion fabric Suggested fabrics are light to medium weight tightly woven fabrics with some drape
• 1/2 yard of lightweight fusible interfacing for the collar and collar stand
• Thread • Six (6) ½” buttons • Basic sewing supplies eg. scissors, nips for trimming threads, pins, hand-sewing needles, erasable pen or marker, tracing wheel and paper, hot hemmer ruler (optional, but quite handy), quilting ruler, tape measure, etc.
• Sewing machine in good working order

Pre-cut fashion fabric (Suggested fabrics are light to medium weight tightly woven fabrics with some drape) 4. 1/2 yard of lightweight fusible interfacing (for the collar and collar stand) 5.Thread 6. Six (6) .5 inch or .625 inch buttons 7. Basic sewing supplies (eg. scissors, nips for trimming threads, pins, hand-sewing needles, erasable pen or marker, tracing wheel and paper, hot hemmer ruler (optional, but quite handy), quilting ruler, tape measure, etc.) 8. Sewing machine in good working order Pre-work before class: 1. Sew your muslin only need to sew back, yoke, and front pieces together at the shoulder seam. Some students have discovered that they prefer a longer length shirt and this preliminary bit of work will ensure you are happy with the final result. 2. Pre-wash your fashion fabric as you would normally launder. 3. Lay out and cut your fashion fabric. 4. Cut your interfacing, but do NOT fuse it to the fashion fabric 5. Cut out a second set of collars, collar stands, yokes, and interfacing. 6. Become familiar with your machine's buttonholer function. We will cover button-hole placement/alignment and button stitching but cannot trouble-shoot how your machine actually sews a buttonhole. Bring your manual, if available.
