And Sew It Begins - Beginner's Quilt Class - Tribal Song

Have you always wanted to learn to quilt? Need a refresher course while making a fun quilt?

Join Helen on this 4-week journey, using this which teaches you many techniques from start to finish. All levels welcome; however, the focus will be on best practices of basic quilting. In this series, the following topics will be covered:

  • 1 for the pattern, 1 for my stash: Selecting fabrics for your quilt
  • What rulers do I use?
  • Tackling the scary rotary cutter

This will be a small class (no more than 8 students) so that each student will have individual attention and assistance. There will be homework in between each week to keep everyone on the same page. Supply list sent to all students prior to the start of class.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: This is a beginning quilting class, NOT a beginning sewing class. Students should be comfortable using a sewing machine and sewing straight lines. They should have knowledge of how their sewing machine operates.
Requirements: Sewing machines will not be necessary on the first day of class.
  • Helen will be discussing tools of the trade, pattern reading and fabric selection and cutting your first block. Classes 2-4 will require a sewing machine in good working order.
  • The first class will include color theory and shopping for your fabrics! Any fabric and supplies purchased during this session will receive a 10% discount.
    Class Supplies:

  • Sewing machine in good working order, power cord, foot pedal, manual (just in case))
  • Patchwork foot (1/4" foot)
  • Rotary cutter with new blade (45mm recommended) and cutting mat 24 inch by 36 inch
  • Quilting rulers (sizes recommended: 6"x24", 6 1/2" square, 12 1/2" square)
  • Neutral thread (50 wt cotton recommended)
  • Scissors/snips

    There will be homework in this class in order to complete your quilt in the 4 sessions.

  • Learning techniques
  • During the first week we will cover following a pattern, tools of the trade essential and optional tools, using a rotary cutter, choosing your fabric and sewing an accurate quarter inch seam. Please bring your sewing machine on the first day.
  • During the following weeks you will learn to make half square triangles, a square within a square (and perhaps fussy cutting), a chevron design, sashings and a binding. The pattern lends itself well to a focal fabric to use with other coordinating fabrics plus a background fabric. You may make a 30 in x 46in (baby size) or a 50 in x 66 in (throw size). The fabric requirements are listed on the back of the pattern.
