Applique the Sew Quirky Way



Learn how to do quick and easy applique and use your own machine's decorative stitches to create one of these fun patterns.

With a sassy attitude on the outside, sweet on the inside demeanor and charisma to charm, Frankie the Frenchie will be the perfect companion! Or maybe you would prefer the Purrfectly styled, Furlicity is a fun-loving feline ready to leap, run and pounce. 

Both Frenchie and Furlicity will make anyone smile with plenty of options to personalize, creating one-of-a-kind gifts. 

Each pattern includes directions to sew your Frankie block into a mini quilt, cushion and tote or your Furlicity block into a mini quilt, cushion & tote! 

Skill Level: Beginner 

Techniques Learned: 

  • Basic Fusible Applique Zipper 
  • Tracing, Cutting & Fusing Pattern pieces 
  • Applique Placement Template Use of Decorative Stitches 
  • Working with Steam-A-Seam 
  • Tote Construction 
  • Pillow Construction
  • Read & understand pattern instructions and symbols 

Supplies Needed for both days of Class: (Additional supplies for day 2 are marked in () ) 

  • Sewing machine with stitch plates (if necessary), ¼” foot, open embroidery foot or open toe foot or applique foot and #14 Microtex needle or Non-stick needle
  • Knee Lifter (optional) 
  • Sewing Machine Manual (reference: decorative stitches) 
  • Threads for applique on day 1 (day 2 – piecing) 
  • Pins, Rotary Cutter 
  • Pencil for tracing 
  • Rulers (15” square ruler or 12 ½” and other sizes are helpful) (day 2) 
  • Cutting mat for personal use 
  • Small Iron and pressing mat for personal use 
  • Applique Sheet or non-stick pressing sheet 
  • Scissors (fabric and paper) 
  • A pair of small sharp 6” serrated edge scissors (cutting out applique pieces) 
  • Washi tape or a light stick tape (holds the template in place on the back of the applique sheet 
  • Tweezers 
  • Washout Marking pencils or pens; Frixion Pens; chalk; Air Erase Pen to mark with 
  • ¼” Steam-A Seam Double Sided Fusible Tape and/or By Annie’s Basting Tape (day 2) 
  • OPTIONAL: Lightbox 
  • Irons and Large Cutting Mats (provided by store)
