  • 1 for the pattern, 1 for my stash: Selecting fabrics for your quilt
  • What rulers do I use?
  • Tackling the scary rotary cutter
  • I've cut my fabric to sew it back together again? Piecing three basic blocks
  • Ironing vs. Pressing: Yes, there is a difference
  • Putting Humpty Dumpty together again: Assembling your quilt top
  • A safety net: Adding borders
  • Sandwiches 101: Basting your quilt
  • Don't stop now: Quilting for beginner's
  • At the finish line: Binding your quilt
  • Sign that masterpiece: Labeling and why you should

This will be a small class (no more than 8 students) so that each student will have individual attention and assistance. There will be homework in between each week to keep everyone on the same page. There will be a kit available and a supply list sent to all students prior to the start of class.

Skill Level: beginner
Skill Details: This is a beginning quilting class, NOT a beginning sewing class. Students should be comfortable using a sewing machine and sewing straight lines. They should have knowledge of how their sewing machine operates.
Requirements: Sewing machines will not be necessary on the first day of class. Helen will be discussing tools of the trade, pattern reading and fabric selection and cutting your first block. Classes 2-5 will require a sewing machine in good working order. If you do not have one, you may rent one of ours; however, you will need to make arrangements in advance to reserve the machine and to learn the basics of how to operate it.

Class Supplies:

  • Sewing machine in good working order, power cord, foot pedal, manual (just in case)
  • Patchwork foot (1/4" foot)
  • Rotary cutter with new blade (45mm recommended)
  • Quilting rulers (sizes recommended: 6"x24", 6 1/2" square, 12 1/2" square)
  • Neutral thread (50 wt cotton recommended)
  • Scissors/snips

  • There will be homework in this class in order to complete your quilt in the 5 sessions. If you are stuck and need help, or would like to work in our studio uninterrupted (you know: kids, pets, laundry, spouses) - you are free to join us on Wednesday's from 11-2 for open sew.
